I find it hard to believe there is a better way of getting through the northwest than this. After Northwich the Cheshire Cycle Way is flat, green, quiet and brilliant for cycling. This takes you past Lymm and nearly to Leigh. The road to Westhoughton is fine. There is a long climb onto the moorland north of Bolton and through Belmont. The A675 is wide, reasonably quiet and good for cycling. The fast descent into Blackburn is spoiled by speed humps. Follow A666 signs through Blackburn centre. Go through Whalley and the longer than expected B-road stretch to Clitheroe. Apart from the hills near Bolton this is a very flat route.

Camping at Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club site. As you would expect from the club site the facilities are exemplary, camping was flat and dry. The site is right next to the River Ribble. The town is about a mile walk away, there is a pub close to the site for eating.
