Andrew had mentioned that Tom and he were thinking of doing this mad thing last summer when the thought of turning forty was foremost in my mind. I thought this would be a good way to mark that milestone and get fitter and slimmer at the same time! Also it gives me an opportunity to raise some money for my chosen charity, I've never done anything like this before so it's a whole new challenge for me. Having an aim has really made me get out on the bike in all weathers during the winter and I can't wait until we start the trip now.
I have decided to support WaterAid through sponsorship whilst I do the LEJOG trip. I have worked in Africa with my job helping to improve rural water supplies and have seen at first hand the problems that water poverty causes. I saw one instance of villagers having to walk several kilometres to collect water from a dirty river because the handpump in the borehole in their village was broken. The maintenance crew hadn't been to fix it for several months. WaterAid works in 17 countries providing water, sanitation and hygiene education to some of the world's poorest people. Just £15 is enough to give one person a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. |
