The A836 is modern and wide and recently upgraded. The road goes up and over four headlands between small bays before you pass Dounreay which is quite tough cycling. There is one more up and over before Thurso. Follow John o' Groats signs out of the town. The last twenty miles are basically flat, a very modest hill at Mey. We ignored NCN 1 signs that take minor roads away from the very quiet A836 and didn't seem worth the extra distance and navigation. The two miles to Duncansby Head go down and up a short hill. From JOG we took the A99 south to Wick which had gentle gradients and was very quiet.
Camping at Wick Caravan and Camping site was very good. Facilities were good, showers were a bit small and a bit difficult to control. Very convenient for the station which is just half a mile away along a riverside path. Wick is a short walk away for eating places.
