Day 9 - Clitheroe to Temple Sowerby

Day 11 - Shawhead to Troon

Should have been an easy day but the headwind along the Solway Firth was slowing us down. The road following the Eden valley via Lazonby was undulating but quiet. Head into Carlisle centre using the A6 and follow A7 signs to get out again. Follow the NCN signs to Gretna after the centre which takes you via Cargo (industrial area with some lorries). You end up on a new road alongside the new M6 that takes you to Gretna. Follow NCN signs to Annan but ignore them after Annan town centre as it just takes you on a pointless loop via a riverside path to Newbie. The NCN route via Powfoot gets you off the rather busy B724 for a bit. The road over Lochar Moss is a slight climb. The road alongside Cairn Water is very pretty. The final couple of miles to Barnsoul are uphill. Route is generally very flat though.

The campsite shown on OS maps at Dumfries has closed down (northwest of the town). The next nearest was near Shawhead called Barnsoul Farm. Very good camping with kitchen and lounge facilities. Showers were good. Probably would have used the road via Terregles to get there had we known we were heading that way! You will need to pick up food supplies in Dumfries.
